Field Notes

Short observations about keeping small digital projects reliable.

How to compare two network routes

Measure both routes from the same device in the same session. Record the median round-trip time, but also look at the slowest replies and lost packets. A route with a lower median can still feel worse if delays jump every few seconds.

What belongs in a backup

Keep the configuration, version information and restoration steps together. Store sensitive files separately from the public project. Test the restore into a fresh directory before relying on the backup.

Reading a DNS result

Ask the authoritative nameserver what it serves, then compare that answer with a public resolver. The two can disagree during an update because the resolver keeps older answers until their TTL expires.
